After the death of king Dashrath the affairs of the state came under the control of Bharat. Considering that he was young and unexperienced king Janak stayed at Ayodhya for some time to help and to guide Bharat in performing his duties. As per the Indian customs the stay of a father at his daughter's in laws house is not considered ethical therefore king Janak purchased there some land and established a colony. Even today it is called Janak Aura, there is a Janak temple also.
